Air-Source Heat Pumps
At TLC Energy Performance, we offer air source heat pumps to heat your home and water with great efficiency. Air source heat pumps work when outside air is blown over a network of tubes that are filled with a refrigerant. This warms up the refrigerant, converting it from a liquid into a gas. The gas passes through a compressor to increase pressure and add more heat. The now compressed, hot gas is passed into a heat exchanger surrounded by cool air or water. The refrigerant transfers its heat to the cool air or water to heat it. This is circulated around your home to provide heating and hot water. The refrigerant then cools and begins the process once again.
Air source heat pumps work more effectively when the difference in temperature between inside and outside is less. This means that they are good for underfloor heating systems as floors cover a much larger surface area than radiators so they dont need to get as hot to provide the same amount of heat.
There are two main types of air source heat pumps.
Air-to-water air source heat pumps. Most air source heat pump installations in the UK are Air-to-water. The heat here is switched over to the more traditional ‘wet’ heating systems, giving you hot water and central heating.Air-to-air source heat pumps. A small amount of UK air source heat pumps are air to air. This transfers the heat into the air which is then circulated around the home. This air source heat pump does not provide hot water however. These can be put in both heating and cooling mode depending on the season, often referred as air-conditioning units.

DID YOU KNOW?
An air source heat pump works essentially like a fridge in reverse. Whilst fridges extract energy from their closed interior, air source heat pumps extract it from the surrounding air, collecting and then condensing energy before compressing it into a heat source.
